Yoga Meditation
Yoga Meditation is a simple technique that uses meditation sound to calm the mind, relieve anxiety, and uncover our eternal identity and natural fulfillment within. We are eternal spirit souls temporarily in the finite material world. We are not our body or our mind — these are limited, temporary, material coverings. Because our essence is spirit (eternal and limitless in nature), we cannot find satisfaction in matter (temporary and limited in nature), such as through the body, the mind, or things, situations, or relationships in this world. It is our nature to be happy and to seek pleasure; but because our essence is unlimited and eternal, if we seek pleasure and happiness in limited, temporary matter, we will always be frustrated and unfulfilled. This can lead to anxiety, depression, anger, and many other symptoms of lack of fulfillment. When we identify with the body or the mind as ourselves, we can feel frustrated, overwhelmed, and even controlled by them. The practice of Yoga Meditation frees us from identifying with the body and mind, allows us to bring them under our control, and enables us to experience actual satisfaction by linking up with the eternal, infinite realm through the transcendental sound of mantra. The process of Yoga Meditation is one of self-discovery — that is, uncovering what is already there within us. We already have what we need. We just need to uncover it.

Start Meditating Now
If you would like to start your meditation practice right now, here is a simple meditation sound done with breath:
GAURANGA
This is said in three syllables, pronounced [gor] [rung] [gah]. Sit tall and comfortably (in a chair, on a sofa, on the floor, or however you are comfortable). Inhale deeply, hearing the mantra in your mind, and then exhale, saying it out loud, spreading it across your entire exhalation. Your voice can be at whatever pitch is most comfortable for you. Continue at your own pace, keeping the pace and depth of your breath comfortable for you. If you are not used to breathing deeply, it’s okay to stop and breathe normally, and then resume the mantra breathing.
Do this for 5-10 minutes or as long as you want. Keep your mind on the sound, allowing the sound to calm and relax your mind. Don’t worry about the time or the number of breaths you take or any other thoughts. Try to do your meditation away from distractions, like the phone, computer, and other people, so that you can really relax into the sound.
Here is a link to this meditation on our Sound Cloud page: https://soundcloud.com/yogameditationgroup/gauranga-breathing
The best times for meditation are first thing in the morning and before you go to bed at night, but it can be done any time you can find a few quiet moments to relax your mind. You can even “say” the mantra silently in your mind any time you aren’t able to say it out loud (like at work, school, etc.). This gives your mind a gentle, relaxing break in your day.
We hope this is helpful. There are other meditation techniques we can teach you as well. It is usually easier to learn meditation in person and to do it with other people, and getting to know others who are practicing meditation is also helpful as a support system. So please don’t hesitate to contact us for classes, questions, and so on. We have been practicing and teaching meditation for over 50 years and have raised our children with meditation as well. We are very happy to share our experience and knowledge with you. Yoga Meditation changed our lives. We hope it will change yours too! Namaste.
